In June of 2000, the first national union for nurses began at a founding convention held at the Indianapolis Convention Center. Billed as the "Union For Nurses, By Nurses," the United American Nurses has over 100,000 members nationwide. Soon after this founding convention, the UAN affiliated with the AFL-CIO.
