This maker of industrial and automotive roller chains as organized by the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) Local 1697 in 1943. Diamond Chain president at that time, L.M. Wainwright had remarked before the USWA was successful in organizing the plant, that "I'll never have a union in my plant!" To this, USWA District official James Robb later replied, "Well, never is a long, long time."
Before being organized, workers at Diamond Chain struck in 1922 and faced opposition from the Associated Employers of Indianapolis, who spent $25,000 to break the strike. It was reported that this money was spent to "spread a gigantic net that saved the plant from being dynamited." |
