Description

There were several communist organizations in the city in the 1930s, with an estimated combined membership of 2,000. Organizers held a mass meeting in 1930, at which the main speakers exhorted the crowd to join them in the "revolutionary communist movement for equality of Negro and white workers under a common banner for the overthrow of imperialist capitalism." Communists also organized to fight against evictions in the city during the depression.
