Louis Budenz was born in Indianapolis on July 17, 1891. Trained as a lawyer, he became director of the American Civil Liberties Union in 1920. He was the editor of several labor union and socialist publications, including "Labor Age" and wrote for the Communist paper, "The Daily Worker." He was also an active union organizer and was involved in several organizing drives at the Real Silk and other mills in the Indianapolis area.
