Indianapolis' first Union Station was the first centralized station in the country. Strike activity during the Great Railroad Strike of 1877 was centered at the station. Within 30 years, railroad traffic outgrew the station and it was demolished in 1886. The second – and current – Union Station was built just north of the initial installation.
