John J. McNamara, the Secretary-Treasurer of the BSIWU, headquartered in Indianapolis, was arrested during a 1911 Executive Board meeting at the Monument Circle office and charged with conspiracy in the dynamiting of the Los Angeles Times building. The local labor community rallied in support of the accused, forming a defense committee. On the advice of Clarence Darrow, both men plead guilty. A total of 51 men are arrested with 40 being brought to trial in Indianapolis. Thirty-eight are found guilty, including McNamara.
