| The United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) was formed in 1890. From 1898 until 1934, the UMWA was headquartered in Indianapolis and held its annual conventions in the city until 1934. John L. Lewis was the charismatic president of the union from 1919 to 1960. During Lewis’ tenure in Indianapolis, he maintained the national union headquarters on the 11th floor of the Merchants Bank Building. The UMWA moved its headquarters to Washington DC in 1934. | ||||
