Description

The Knights of Labor and a group of independent trade unions led the first labor day parade in Indianapolis on September 19, 1886. An estimated 4,000 people attended the daylong celebration. In later years, the parade was switched from Monday to Sunday because many working people were not able to get the Monday "workers’ holiday" off from work. In 1903, Samuel Gompers, President of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) attended the parade, which was attended by nearly 6,000 people.

The Central Indiana Labor Council has revived the Labor Day celebration in recent years, with each year seeing exponential growth in participants and spectators. After the parade, currently taking place the Saturday of Labor Day weekend - now a National holiday, several local unions gather for picnics and festivities in the downtown area.
