| From its opening in 1886 until its destruction by fire in 1958, Tomlinson Hall served as an important meeting site for the city. A single doorway arch stands in the courtyard of present-day City Market as a monument to the building. A sampling of the events that took place in the hall: *** United Mine Workers of America National conventions - 1901 and 1914. *** The Equal Suffrage Association together with the suffrage committee of the Central Labor Union held a large meeting at Tomlinson Hall on April 23, 1912. *** Samuel Gompers, president of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) spoke on January 4, 1915. *** William 'Big Bill' Haywood spoke on April 9, 1912. Haywood had been one of the founders of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW or "Wobblies"). *** New Deal, National Industrial Recovery Act (NRA). On July 31, 1933, a mass meeting was held to organize efforts to "unionize every industry in the city under the NRA." | ||||
